The Svalbardsyk Homepage

Warning: This page can make you Svalbardsyk (Svalbardsick in Norwegian). Svalbardsick people tend to show around pictures displaying them in front of beautiful glaciers and deep blue fjords. If you are not deeply convinced that the best way to spend your holiday is on a sunny Mediterranean beach, you are in danger of contracting Svalbard sickness from viewing these pages. What is Svalbard?

Svalbard, also known as Spitsbergen or Spitzbergen, is an arctic archipelago, situated approximately half way between the Norwegian North Cape and the North Pole. Despite this northern location, the climate is relatively tempered. The landscape is dominated by sharp mountain peaks and huge glaciers flowing down to the numerous fjords. Only a few thousand people live there throughout the year, mainly from mining, scientific research, and, more recently, tourism.
